Sam Rainsy Indicted for Public Defamation of an Individual

AKP Phnom Penh, June 18, 2020 —

Sam Rainsy, former leader of the dissolved National Rescue Party of Cambodia (CNRP), was indicted for public defamation against an individual by an investigating judge of the Paris Court of Justice on June 8.

The information was shared by a group of French lawyers of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, in a recent press release.

This indictment covers all of the charges referred to in the complaint filed on Aug. 20, 2019 by Samdech Techo Hun Sèn, the statement said.

“The Examining Magistrate therefore considered that there were serious or concordant indications making it likely that Mr. Sam Rainsy could have participated in the commission of the alleged offense; it is also important to specify that Mr. Sam Rainsy does not contest the reality of the remarks,” underlined the same source.

“His referral to the Paris Criminal Court is inevitable,” concluded the press release.

Sam Rainsy has been facing many court sentences. He has spent most part of his political life overseas, including through self-exile to avoid legal sentences.
