Technical Discussion on Trade Union Law Amendment
AKP Phnom Penh, August 05, 2019 –
Technical aspect for the amendment of Trade Union Law, in response to users’ need, is being discussed grounding on inputs from key stakeholders, according to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training.
Secretary of State H.E. Mam Vannak led the national technical workshop with concerned officials taking place late last week at Sunway Hotel here in Phom Penh.
Adopted on May 17, 2016, the trade union law is somewhat a new legal document, and the modification of the law intends to address emerging challenges in its implementation in order to further ensure harmony and promote the right of labour organisations, said the secretary of state.
Thanks to the existence of the law, underlined H.E. Mam Vannak, there were 4,811 labour organisations registered at the labour ministry by the first semester of 2019, and of them 4,811 are local unions, 195 union federations, and 29 confederation unions.
Eventually, labour disputes and number of demonstrations have decreased noticeably, continued the secretary of state.
The key purposes of the trade union law are to protect the rights and legal benefits of workers, promote negotiation freedom between employees and employers, ensure harmony of their relations, and contribute to the development of decent job, labour productivity, and investments.
It is optimistic that the amendment of the law will bring its effectiveness of the law to a new level.
