NEC: Voter Turnout Rate Is 99.94 Percent

About 99.94 percent of the 11,572 eligible voters cast their ballots during the 3rd Election of Capital, Provincial, Municipal, District and Khan Councils held across the country on May 26.

Speaking at a meeting with all stakeholders to review the election process at the National Election Committee (NEC)’s headquarters in Phnom Penh this afternoon, H.E. Nuth Sokhom, the committee’s Vice President, said seven voters were absent, one of them in Krek commune, Ponhea Krek district, Thbong Khmum province, passed away in a road accident.

The other six, he added, are in Battambang (1), Kampong Thom (2), Kampot (1), Rattanakiri (1), and Preah Vihear (1) provinces.

“Overall, the process of the election and ballot counting was conducted smoothly without neither obstruction nor violence nor intimidation and in a good security and order,” he stressed.

The third Election of Capital, Provincial, Municipal, District and Khan Councils kicked off this morning at 7:00 in 203 polling stations in the 25 provinces and capital.

According to a NEC’s press release, as of 10:30 am, the election was ended in 196 out of the 203 polling stations while more than 50 percent of the polling stations finished the vote counting process.

The election took place under the observation of 1,010 national observers from 19 institutions, most of the them from the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, as well as 704 political agents from five out of seven registered political parties.

The seven political parties registered for the race for the 559 seats at capital and provincial councils and 3,555 seats at municipal, district and Khan councils are the Cambodian People’s Party, Cambodian Nationality Party, FUNCINPEC, Khmer National United Party, Cambodian Youth Party, Khmer Will Party, and Khmer Republican Party.

The preliminary results will be announced on the National Television of Kampuchea (TVK), the Radio National Kampuchea (RNK) and Wat Phnom National Radio this evening, while the official ones will be on June 8.
