Display of Chapei Dang Veng Made of Used Plastic Bottles and Straws
AKP Phnom Penh, November 26, 2018 —
Unique Chapei Dang Veng – a Cambodian two-stringed, long-necked guitar – made of plastic bottles of pure drinking water will be put for display during Chapei Dang Veng Festival in Siem Reap province later this month.
Stretching six metres long, the creative work is expected to contribute positively to not only promoting the Cambodian traditional musical instrument so-called Chapei Dang Veng, but also the recycling of used materials.
The plastic Chapei Dang Veng was made by Mr. Riem Monisilong, an artist, from 6,000 used plastic bottles and 16,000 drinking straws.
The display of the environment-friendly traditional instrument is part of the mainstream event co-organised by Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and Cambodia Living Arts (CLA) to promote Cambodian art opened for public visit free of charge at Rajabo pagoda (Wat Bo) from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.
Chapei Dang Veng was inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on Nov. 30, 2016.
